Reach out to our team to talk through the three ways to participate, academic credit, and how the Prague internship works with Transitions.

THREE WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

Students can choose an intensive international reporting course, a six-week professional internship, or combine the two for a nine-week experience that moves naturally from training to professional newsroom work.

1. Going on Assignment in Prague — June 5–23, 2027. Nearly three weeks learning to work as foreign correspondents alongside University of Tennessee students and other participants: workshops, field reporting, story coaching, media visits and cultural activities.

2. Prague Media Internship (Six Weeks) — June 28–Aug. 6, 2027. Six weeks working directly with Transitions, supported by a limited series of professional workshops and mentoring sessions. Journalism interns work toward at least three stories for publication consideration.

3. Going on Assignment + Media Internship — June 5–Aug. 6, 2027. Students begin with Going on Assignment, then move into the six-week internship, taking on more ambitious assignments, editorial meetings and one-on-one work with professional editors.

PRAGUE & CENTRAL EUROPE

Professional experience is combined with activities that help students understand the city and region in which they are working: an introductory Prague orientation/walking tour, exploration of the country’s communist past and the 1989 Velvet Revolution, meetings with people working on contemporary Czech and European issues, cultural activities and an excursion outside Prague. Students also have time to explore Prague independently and travel on weekends.

WHY TRANSITIONS?

Founded in Prague in 1999, Transitions is an international media development organization and publisher with more than two decades of experience training journalists and introducing students to international reporting. Transitions has trained thousands of journalists and students from Europe, the United States and other parts of the world, and has extensive experience working with American universities and students in Prague, including its long-running Going on Assignment program with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

PROFESSIONAL MEDIA VISITS

Prague offers an unusual opportunity to meet very different models of journalism, from Czech national media to major international news organizations. Potential visits across the summer include:

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) — international journalism, reporting in authoritarian environments and working across languages and borders

Czech Radio — public-service media and audio journalism

Respekt — magazine journalism, politics and long-form reporting

Seznam.cz / Seznam Zprávy — digital journalism, AI and disinformation

THE INTERNSHIP

Students spend approximately 25–30 hours per week working with Transitions across three possible tracks:

Journalism & Multimedia (primary track) — developing stories about Prague, the Czech Republic and Central Europe for an international audience, from pitching through publication, aiming for at least three stories for publication consideration.

Social Media & Audience Engagement — social strategy and production, audience development, newsletters and multimedia promotion.

Marketing & Communications — communications, membership development and promotion of educational programs and events for an international nonprofit media organization.

HOUSING & STUDENT SUPPORT

Housing and student support arrangements are still being finalized.  An optional 6 days/5 nights are available between the two Going on Assignment and Media Internship from June 23–27.

TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

The Prague Intership operates as a field-based, professional media project where students produce real published work under faculty mentorship. It does not cover:

  • Leisure / Pure Tourism: Vacation-style travel, adventure tourism, leisure travel, or tours without an intense academic deliverable as assigned by the internship or coursework.

Prague’s location makes cities such as Berlin, Vienna, Krakow and Budapest easily accessible. Students have time to independently explore Prague and travel on weekends.

Students who are staying between the Going on Assignment and Media Internship will have independent travel opportunities.  Independent travel and overnight stays from June 23–27

Academic Credit

Students have the option to earn three credits of an upper-division journalism elective for Going on Assignment. The credits will be issued by the University of Jamestown, and we will work with you so they are easily transferable to your university. Transfer credit ultimately depends on a student’s home university. The cost for three academic credit is $450 (See the FAST FACTS at the top of the page for Program Cost).

NOTE: Students on a quarter system will be able to transfer as four(4) credits at no additional fee for ieiMedia courses that are listed as three(3) respectively. Transfer credit ultimately depends on a student’s home university. Please check with your university for procedures to follow when transferring credits to your institution.

Required internship and seminar/contact hours, structured media visits counting toward academic contact hours are in the process of review and will be announced in the upcoming months.  Please be familiar with your university requirements for earning internship credit.

STUDENTS

The program is designed for college students, alongside University of Tennessee students and other participants on Going on Assignment. Journalism is the flagship focus, with additional internship opportunities in social media/audience engagement and marketing/communications for students in those areas of interest.

 BUILD YOUR PORTFOLI0

By the end of the six-week internship, journalism participants should have: significant professional internship experience in an international newsroom; at least three substantial stories developed for publication consideration; professional editing and mentoring; experience interviewing and reporting across cultures; multimedia and international reporting experience; greater knowledge of Central Europe and its media environment; connections with journalists and media professionals; a stronger professional portfolio; and academic credit, subject to ieiMedia and home-university requirements.

Students don’t just learn about another country. They learn that they can report in another country.
