A media study abroad program offers opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture while honing your professional skills. Whether you’re heading to picturesque Arles, cosmopolitan Berlin, or colorful Oaxaca, smart packing is key to a successful and enjoyable experience. Here’s how to pack efficiently for your three- to four-week ieiMedia summer program.

The Art of Packing Light

The golden rule of study abroad packing? Less is more. You’ll want to be mobile and unencumbered, ready to capture stories at a moment’s notice. Aim to pack only what you can comfortably carry yourself — ideally one rolling suitcase or backpack and a daypack. Remember, you’re not just a student — you’re a media professional in training!

Essentials for Your Carry-on

Your carry-on bag is your lifeline. Pack it wisely with:

  • Passport (original and a photocopy)
  • Student ID
  • Essential medications in original containers
  • A change of clothes
  • Basic toiletries
  • Valuables (camera, laptop, chargers)
  • Electrical adapters for your destination
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Credit card and/or debit card

Pro tip: Include your contact information and program address inside and outside your luggage in case your luggage is lost or delayed.

Clothing: Versatile and Professional

When it comes to clothing, think versatile pieces that can transition from casual to professional, and consider a color palette that allows you to mix and match:

  • 2-3 modest professional outfits for interviews and meetings
  • 2-3 pairs of pants or casual skirts
  • 1-2 pairs of shorts
  • A mix of shirts for layering
  • Light raincoat and sweater
  • Comfortable walking shoes (athletic shoes or sports sandals) and one pair of dressier shoes
  • Workout clothes and swimwear

Tech Essentials

As a media student, your gear is crucial. Don’t forget:

  • Laptop and charger
  • Digital camera, lenses, charger, batteries and camera case
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Headphones or earbuds
  • Electrical adapters (at least two for your destination)
  • Optional (but recommended if you’re planning to shoot video): Portable external hard drive for extra storage

Cultural Considerations and Comfort

Pack items that will help you engage with the local culture and stay comfortable:

  • If you’re staying with a host family, bring a small gift from your home city or state (food like nuts and dried fruit is a good choice but nothing perishable)
  • Journal for documenting your experiences

Remember, you’re representing ieiMedia and your home country. Opt for clothing that’s respectful of local customs. When entering churches and other houses of worship, it’s generally considered respectful to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, meaning no tank tops, short skirts, or shorts; a scarf or shawl can be useful to cover up if needed.

Health and safety

Don’t forget:

  • A small first-aid kit
  • Prescription medications with written prescriptions using generic names
  • Spare glasses or contact lenses and solution
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Sun hat
  • Travel umbrella

Final tips

  • Check airline regulations for luggage restrictions.
  • Leave space in your suitcase for souvenirs.
  • Remember, you can buy most toiletries at your destination, but you may not be able to find your favorite brands.
  • If you’re a U.S. citizen or national, enroll in the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service that allows you to get real-time updates about health, weather, safety, and security in the country you are visiting.

By following these guidelines, you’ll be well prepared for your ieiMedia summer program. Pack smart, travel light, and get ready for an unforgettable study abroad experience!
