If you want the most up-to-date hairstyles available
in Milan, Italy’s fashion capital, Matteo Susini can give
them to you in Cagli. Today the 31-year-old Susini owns a salon
near the piazza.
His interest in hairdressing began when he helped his mother, Luisa
Violini, in her salon. When he was older and had completed his mandatory
year in military, he realized that he was passionate about hairdressing
and decided to go to fashion school.

He attracts clients who are looking
for something stylish, something modern. He advertises his salon
by mailing out brochures within a 25-kilometer radius of Cagli.
Susini also puts together a fashion show in the piazza twice a year,
once in August and once during the Christmas season.

Susini works in two different environments. In addition to working
at the salon in Cagli, he often travels to Milan to teach new styles
to other hairdressers by working on models. When he travels to Milan,
he creates extreme hairstyles for the fashion world. Susini said
that working in Milan is a very open environment, quite different
from styling customers’ hair in the salon.
|
Susini said that most of his customers are
very aware of what is fashionable and in style. He explained
that the role of the hairdresser has changed in the sense
that he feels like a “consultant” by assessing
what would fit the customer best according to his or her personality.
His customers include both sexes.

In terms of how hairstyles have changed, Susini said that
a cleaner, neat cut is in style. What has remained constant
since the 1960s is the lighter-texture look, which is simple
and soft. Susini said that the “bob” haircut has
just come out in London and will probably spread.
Susini said he aspires to eventually move to Milan and has
considered opening a salon there. It is, however, a very competitive
environment, and since he has already made a name for himself
in Cagli, he has decided to stay for a while. |
