Foreign chatter bounces off the walls as glasses filled with vino are raised in a toast: "cin, cin" (chin, chin). A lively man and woman with their keyboards, drums and chimes perform peppy American oldies and traditional Italian songs. Children giggle as they cartwheel and play tag on their playground, the dance floor. The savory aroma of brick-oven pizza and tangy tomato sauce trails through the air causing mouths to water. Servers move with the slow efficiency typical of the Cagliesi pace of life while bouncers bustle about in preparation for the dance club's opening. All around there is an overwhelming feeling of close family ties and an appreciation for good food and conversation.
This is dinner at Masaj, hours before the young people crowd the club's entrance, dancing to pop music pumping from the speakers. Linen-covered tables line one of the dance floors and all are occupied. The clear night sky serves as the ceiling, creating a romantically dim atmosphere. Meals here start with a bottle of wine and an appetizer of bruschetta, antipasto, or prosciutto and melon, moving on to a wide selection of pasta or thin-crusted pizza. Just when it seems the best is over, satisfying desserts like panna cotta and gelati finish the meal.
Although Masaj's restaurant is often overshadowed by its discoteca, it should not be sold short. It is the second side of Masaj, enjoyed by numerous families not only for its excellent food, but also for its warm and inviting atmosphere.
